Indonesia has 110 visa types, but most people need one of about a dozen. The right one depends on what you will do here, for how long, and sometimes on your age, income or family. This guide groups them by purpose. If you prefer to answer a few questions instead, our Visa Finder does it for you.
- Short visits use the visa exemption (A1), the Visa on Arrival (B1), the C1 visa or the multiple-entry D1 and D2 visas.
- Living in Indonesia needs a stay permit (KITAS): for work (E23), investment (E28), family (E31), retirement (E33E and E33F), remote work (E33G) or study (E30).
- Remote worker KITAS (E33G): income of at least USD 60,000 a year from an employer abroad, valid for 1 year.
- Retirement visa for 5 years (E33E): age 55 or over, USD 50,000 deposit in a state-owned bank and USD 3,000 income a month.
- Global Citizen of Indonesia, since January 2026: permanent stay for former citizens and their descendants.
Visa or KITAS: what is the difference?
A visa lets you enter Indonesia for a purpose. A KITAS (limited stay permit) is what you hold while you live here, usually for one or two years, or five to ten years for some long-stay visas. A KITAP is the permanent stay permit some KITAS holders can move to later.

Short visits
For holidays and business trips you rarely need more than a visitor visa. Citizens of 19 countries can use the 30-day visa exemption; most other visitors buy a Visa on Arrival or an e-VoA, which can be extended once. The C1 visa allows up to 180 days, and the D1 and D2 multiple-entry visas suit people who come back several times a year. Details are in our guide to how long you can stay.
Work and remote work
Since June 2025 one work KITAS, E23, covers all sectors that used to have separate visas. Your employer sponsors you. If you work remotely for a company outside Indonesia, the remote worker KITAS (E33G) lets you live here for a year, provided you earn at least USD 60,000 a year from that employer. You may not work for Indonesian clients on it.
Investment and the Golden Visa
Shareholders of an Indonesian company can hold an investor KITAS (E28A). The Golden Visa gives 5 or 10 years. According to the Directorate General of Immigration, an individual investor who sets up a company needs USD 2,500,000 for 5 years or USD 5,000,000 for 10 years; an investor who does not set up a company places USD 350,000 or USD 700,000 in Indonesian government bonds, listed shares or deposits.
Family, retirement and Indonesian roots
Spouses, children and parents of Indonesian citizens or KITAS holders have their own family KITAS (E31). People aged 55 or over can retire on the E33F (1 year) or the E33E (5 years, with a USD 50,000 deposit and USD 3,000 income a month). Former Indonesian citizens and their descendants can apply for the new Global Citizen of Indonesia status.

Frequently asked questions
Can I work on a tourist visa?
No. Visitor visas allow meetings, buying goods and similar activities, but not a job with an Indonesian employer. You need a work KITAS sponsored by the employer, or the E33G if you work for a company abroad.
What is the minimum age for the retirement visa?
55. Both the 1-year (E33F) and the 5-year (E33E) retirement visas are for people aged 55 or over.
How long does a Golden Visa last?
Five or ten years, depending on the size of the investment.
